On March 6, the Charles County Department of Recreation, Parks and Tourism invited residents to the highly anticipated ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Calm Cove Sensory Space. This event marked a significant milestone in the county’s efforts to create inclusive and engaging recreational spaces for residents of all ages and abilities.
The Calm Cove Sensory Space is a thoughtfully designed area located at Elite Gymnastics & Recreation Center in Waldorf. It features multi-sensory resources aimed at supporting individuals with sensory needs while captivating participants with fun and engaging activities. The space was specifically created to meet the diverse needs of the community, offering an environment that can either stimulate or soothe the senses, depending on the user’s preferences. According to the recreation department’s website, the space is designed to stimulate all five senses, making it a unique and versatile resource for those who benefit from sensory engagement.
Among the notable attendees of the ribbon-cutting ceremony were Commissioner Ralph E. Patterson II (D), Acting County Administrator Deborah Hall, and Recreation, Parks and Tourism Director Kelli Beavers. Their presence underscored the importance of this new facility and its potential impact on the community.
Commissioner Patterson presented Brandon Morgan, a therapeutic recreation specialist who played a key role in establishing the Calm Cove Sensory Space, with an official citation from the Charles County commissioners. This recognition highlighted Morgan’s dedication and hard work in bringing this vision to life.
“I love kids,” Hall said in her opening remarks, emphasizing her enthusiasm for the creation of a space that caters to individuals with special needs. Her heartfelt words resonated with attendees, many of whom have been advocating for more inclusive recreational opportunities in the county.
Hall also reflected on her experiences with the budget process, sharing an anecdote about Beavers and her commitment to securing funding for projects like the Calm Cove Sensory Space. “Budget meetings with other departments usually do not take the amount of time allotted, but it is not the case with Beavers and the recreation, parks and tourism department,” Hall explained. She commended Beavers for consistently maximizing her time in these meetings to ensure the department’s projects receive the necessary resources.
As the ribbon was cut, children eagerly rushed into the space, their excitement evident as they explored its many features. Highlights included a massage chair, a ball pit, bean bag chairs, and an array of toys designed to stimulate the senses. The room also offers customizable lighting options, allowing users to set the mood to suit their needs, whether calming or energizing.
The Calm Cove Sensory Space has been a much-needed addition for families and individuals seeking recreational opportunities tailored to sensory needs. Its accessibility and affordability further enhance its appeal. For just a $5 drop-in fee, visitors can experience the space, and RecPass holders are also eligible to use the facility. The Calm Cove is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to noon and 5 to 7 p.m., as well as on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.
