Zoe’s Just Dezzerts, a beloved dessert shop known for its mouthwatering treats, has recently expanded to a second location in Baltimore, Maryland. This new establishment, located at 807 N. Calvert Street, is not just about satisfying sweet cravings. It also serves a unique mission—providing additional spaces for individuals who are neurodivergent or on the autism spectrum to showcase their creativity, build skills, and thrive in a supportive environment.
Jennifer Goldszmidt, the bakery’s owner and mother of Zoe, shared the heartwarming story behind this expansion. Zoe, after finishing school, discovered a deep passion for baking. Inspired by her daughter’s drive, Jennifer decided to create a workplace where people with autism could feel empowered and valued. Together, they launched Zoe’s Just Dezzerts with a mission: to change the narrative surrounding individuals with disabilities and challenge the outdated perceptions about their abilities.
“Making it so that people can understand that autism is not something to be ashamed of, it’s not something to be hidden, and it’s not something that stops you from being a great employee,” said Jennifer.
This initiative is particularly significant because, according to estimates from the National Institutes of Health (N-I-H), a staggering 80 percent of autistic individuals face unemployment worldwide. This statistic highlights the challenges faced by many neurodivergent individuals who struggle to find meaningful work opportunities. But Zoe’s Just Dezzerts is challenging that statistic, offering a platform for adults on the autism spectrum to show their talents, contribute to the community, and gain valuable employment experience.
One of the bakery’s employees, Kelsey Parker, who is on the autism spectrum, shared her experience working at Zoe’s Just Dezzerts. She emphasized that the opportunity to work at the bakery was not only rewarding but also enriching. “It’s really fun to be working with employees on the autism spectrum. It was overwhelming at first, but then I realized it didn’t look so overwhelming. I love that they have some sweet treats that I love,” Parker said.
For Kelsey, this job has become more than just a paycheck—it is a stepping stone toward achieving her dreams. As an aspiring country singer, Kelsey is working hard to reach her goal of homeownership in Nashville, Tennessee. “I really want to get one. I hope I can earn it. I got two jobs, I pulled them up– I work my butt off at my two paid jobs,” she added, showing her dedication and ambition.
Zoe’s Just Dezzerts is not only providing a safe, supportive space for adults on autism, but it also serves as a model for other businesses. Nonprofits such as Itineris are pushing for greater diversity in the workplace, underscoring the many benefits of employing neurodivergent individuals. The organization has two participants from Itineris Baltimore who are currently working at Zoe’s Just Dezzerts, helping to enrich the bakery’s inclusive environment.
Lauren Eaton, Senior Director of Operations at Itineris Baltimore, highlighted the positive impact of neurodiverse workforces. “We all become more creative, more productive, and better employees when we’re surrounded by diversity and neurodiversity.”
Beyond the workplace, Zoe’s Just Dezzerts is a vibrant part of the local community. The Federal Hill location hosts karaoke nights every Friday, offering an opportunity for customers and employees to connect, have fun, and support one another. These events help foster a deeper sense of community and belonging, bridging the gap between neurodivergent individuals and the wider public.
Zoe’s Just Dezzerts is not only about creating delicious desserts; it is also about opening doors to new opportunities, promoting inclusivity, and supporting adults on autism to achieve their goals. With each treat they bake, Jennifer, Zoe, and their dedicated team continue to spread the message that everyone deserves a chance to shine, regardless of their neurodivergence.
As Zoe’s Just Dezzerts continues to grow, it proves that businesses can be both profitable and socially responsible, offering a space where all individuals, especially those on the autism spectrum, are given the opportunity to thrive. Through this ongoing commitment, the bakery is creating a more inclusive and supportive world, one sweet treat at a time.
